Scenario 01

New chemical handling area.

Engineering’s adding a chemical dosing area, decant station, or laboratory bench. The risk assessment says a shower or eyewash within 10 seconds of the hazard, tepid water, and the alarm tied back to the panel.

Scenario 02

Annual test approaching.

Your stations are due their annual AS 4775 performance test. Flow rate, water temperature, water quality, debris check, valve operation, signage and access path. Records lodged on your file before the audit.

Scenario 03

Alarm not responding.

Pulling the handle no longer triggers the audible or visual alarm that ties back to the control panel or supervisor’s station. Flow switch, wiring, or panel relay has dropped out somewhere along the line.

Scenario 04

Auditor flagged the station.

SafeWork inspector or internal HSE auditor has flagged the existing station. Water temperature out of range, flow rate below 75.7 L/min, location too far from the hazard, or signage and floor-marking missing.

What we do Read the auditor’s note, scope the gap, propose the works to close out the finding, recertify on completion.
What we do (and don’t do)

We install, commission, repair and annually test emergency shower and eyewash stations to AS 4775. Plumbed and self-contained units, tepid-water blending, flow switch and alarm tie-ins, signage, full asset register and annual reminder system. We don’t do the first-aid response itself, the chemical risk assessment, or the electrical control panel build. We integrate cleanly with your electricians and HSE team on those scopes.

From a new install to the annual test.

Most work breaks down into four scopes. Each one runs on its own paperwork, its own test record, and its own line on your compliance register. Here’s the honest version of what each involves.

Scope 01 / New install

New install & commissioning.

Plumbed showers, eyewash stations, combination units. Tepid-water blending where required by AS 4775. Floor drain or bunding integration, alarm tie-in to your control panel, signage and floor-marking, full commissioning record.

Station failed its test or a worn valve has started leaking. Replace the failed component (valve set, eyewash head, tepid blender cartridge) or the full unit. Recertify to AS 4775 and put it back on the register.

Wetherill Park to Penrith.

Western Sydney industrial chemical handling and manufacturing sites run on AS 4775. Wetherill Park, Smithfield, Eastern Creek, Erskine Park and the Penrith industrial estates are full of plants where the annual shower and eyewash test is a non-negotiable line item.

The AS 4775 minimums every site should know: shower flow at least 75.7 L/min for a sustained 15 minutes, eyewash at least 1.5 L/min, water tepid between 16°C and 38°C, and the station reachable within 10 seconds of the hazard with no obstructions in the path.

§05 / How a job actually runs

From hazard walk to certified.

Whether it’s a new install, an annual test, or a rectification, the order is the same. Tight on paperwork, low on disruption to your shift schedule.

Hazard walk.

Walk the area with your HSE lead or production supervisor. Identify the hazard zone, station location, water service capacity, and whether tepid water is needed in this risk class.

SWMS & certs.

SWMS lodged with your site, induction completed for your contractors, certificate of currency provided. Permit-to-work raised before we lift a tool.

Install & tie-in.

Station, valve set, tepid blender if required, alarm tie-in coordinated with your electrician, signage and floor-marking. Every penetration sealed, every joint pressure-tested.

Commission & cert.

Flow-test, temperature-test, alarm-test. Generate the AS 4775 certificate with measured figures and photos. Hand the asset over to your maintenance system with a clean tag.

Is annual testing legally required?
AS 4775 sets the performance and testing requirements for emergency shower and eyewash equipment in Australia. WHS regulations require employers to maintain plant and safety equipment in working order, and AS 4775 is the recognised standard regulators and auditors hold sites against. In practice every reputable industrial site treats the annual performance test as a hard compliance line item. Skip it, and the next audit will pick it up.
What are the AS 4775 minimums for flow and temperature?
Plumbed shower: at least 75.7 litres per minute for a sustained 15 minutes. Plumbed eyewash: at least 1.5 litres per minute, also for 15 minutes. Water temperature held tepid, between 16°C and 38°C. The station must be reachable within 10 seconds of the hazard, on the same level, no obstructions in the path. Signage visible, floor-marking present, and a clear discharge path for the water.
Does my station need tepid water?
If the hazard involves chemicals or substances where a casualty might need to stay under the water for a full 15 minutes, yes. Cold water under that duration becomes a hypothermia risk and stops people staying in long enough to flush properly. Tepid means a thermostatic blender on the supply, with the cold cut-off and scald limit set per AS 4775. We work out the right answer during the hazard walk in step one.
How close to the hazard does a station need to be?
Within 10 seconds of unobstructed travel, on the same level. No stairs, no doors that need a free hand to open, no obstructions in the path. For more hazardous chemicals, immediate adjacency is preferred. We measure this on the walk and design accordingly. If your existing station fails this on a layout change, that’s a common rectification scope.
Can you take over annual testing from a previous plumber?
Yes, and we do this regularly. We’ll do an opening inventory walk, photograph and tag every station, log any existing failures against your register, and quote rectifications separately from the test itself. From that point on, you’re on our annual reminder system and the test happens on schedule without you chasing it.
Plumbed or self-contained, which suits my site?
Plumbed is preferred wherever practical. Unlimited duration, easier to keep tepid, lower ongoing cost. Self-contained is the right answer when plumbed water isn’t viable: mobile work areas, remote yards, temporary chemical compounds. The tradeoff is fluid shelf life and quarterly servicing instead of yearly. We’ll talk through both on the hazard walk and recommend the one that fits your site.
Do you do the activation alarm tie-in?
We install the flow switch on the station and run it back to a junction point. Your electrician picks it up there and ties it into your control panel, supervisor’s station, or BMS. We coordinate the install order so the wiring runs through clean cable trays and the commissioning test is a single combined sign-off rather than two separate visits.
What does the 12-month workmanship warranty cover?
12 months on our workmanship, parts and labour both. If something we installed fails inside that window from a workmanship cause, we come back and fix it free. Manufacturer warranties on the station itself run separately on the vendor’s terms, but we’ll handle the warranty claim on your behalf where it’s our supplied unit. Normal wear, fair-wear-and-tear consumables (cartridges, fluids) sit outside the workmanship cover.
