§02 / Why you’re on this page

Four scenarios, four answers.

Gas calls usually fall into one of four buckets. Quick read on what you’re dealing with so you know what to mention when you ring, and what we’ll need to bring.

Scenario 01 · Urgent

I can smell gas.

Sulphur or rotten-egg smell indoors, near a meter, or by an appliance. Don’t light anything, don’t switch lights on or off, get outside. If you can do it safely, isolate the supply at the meter (natural gas) or shut the cylinder valves (LPG). Treat it as urgent until proven otherwise.

What to do first Step outside, isolate at the meter or gas bottles if safe. Ring 000 if strong. Then ring us. We carry leak detection on the truck.
Scenario 02

New appliance install.

Replacing the cooktop, swapping a gas hot water unit, installing a heater, fitting a BBQ point. We connect, pressure-test, commission, and issue the compliance certificate.

Most common ask Cooktop or hot water swap, like-for-like or upgrade. Photo of the appliance and existing connection helps us quote properly.
Scenario 03

Gas line work.

Extending the line for a new BBQ point, roughing in a renovation, capping a line that’s no longer needed, or adding a new appliance run. The pipework itself, not just an appliance connection.

Most common ask BBQ point extension or kitchen reno rough-in. We measure, quote, install in copper or approved poly, then certify.
Scenario 04

Compliance certificate.

Every appliance install, line extension, or repair we carry out ends with a Gas Compliance Certificate. Required in NSW, kept on file, copy emailed to you.

Most common ask Issued as standard on any new work we do. Certificate covers the work we performed, not pre-existing installation.
If you can smell gas right now

Treat it like a leak, not a smell.

  1. Don’t light anything. No match, no stove, no candle.
  2. Don’t operate electrics. No light switches on or off, no fans, no appliances. A spark is enough.
  3. Open windows and doors if you can do so safely on the way out, then leave the building.
  4. If the smell is strong, ring 000. If it’s faint and outside, ring the gas distributor or us, and we’ll respond as fast as we can.
§03 / The four scopes

Four kinds of gas work, one licence.

Gas fitting in NSW covers everything from a single appliance connection to a full industrial gas system. Here’s how we break it down, and what each scope actually looks like on the day.

Scope 01 / Appliances

Appliance install & swap.

Cooktops, ovens, hot water units, gas heaters, BBQs, hospitality cooktops. Disconnect old, connect new, pressure-test, commission, issue the compliance paperwork.

Scope 04 / Compliance

Gas Compliance Certificate.

Every appliance install, line extension, or repair we carry out ends with a Gas Compliance Certificate to AS/NZS 5601, issued for the work we performed.

Typical job
1 to 2 hours
Cert included
Yes

Covered

  • Appliance install certification
  • Line extension certification
  • Repair certification

Worth flagging

  • Certificate covers the work we did, not pre-existing pipework
  • Non-compliant findings get raised and quoted to fix
  • LPG and natural gas certified separately
Best for Property sale, insurance review, peace-of-mind inspection on an older home, or post-renovation sign-off on a builder’s gas scope.
§04 / The Penrith reality

Old copper, renovated kitchens.

A lot of Penrith’s housing stock was built in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, and the original gas runs were laid in copper at the same time. Most of it is still in service. Most of it is still fine. Some of it isn’t, and a renovation is when the difference shows up.

The other Penrith pattern: renovation waves. A kitchen reno usually means relocating the cooktop, adding a BBQ point, sometimes converting the hot water system. Each one is a small gas job in its own right, often booked around an existing builder’s schedule.

Where leaks tend to happen on older Penrith installs: at joints that have been disturbed during prior work, at appliance valves that weren’t designed for thirty years of cycling, and at meter regulators that are quietly past their service life.

§05 / How a gas job actually runs

From “can you install this” to certificate in hand.

For most domestic appliance jobs, this is the day. Line extensions and full rough-ins are longer, but the order is the same. Every job ends with a Gas Compliance Certificate where the scope qualifies.

1

Phone brief.

You tell us the appliance or the scope, the gas type (natural or LPG), and what’s already there. A photo of the existing point and the appliance plate helps us quote accurately.

2

On-site quote.

We confirm the connection point, check meter capacity for new loads, identify any compliance issues with the existing setup, and write a firm quote covering install and certification.

3

Materials & isolation.

Source approved fittings, copper or poly to AS/NZS 5601. On the day we isolate at the meter, depressurise, and confirm zero pressure before any disconnection.

4

Install, pressure test.

Connect the appliance or run the new line, then a soap-and-gauge pressure test to confirm no leaks. Commission the appliance, set burner pressure, run it through cycles.

5

Certify & hand over.

Issue the Gas Compliance Certificate, walk you through isolation and shut-off, hand over the unit documentation. 12-month workmanship warranty kicks in. Invoice emailed through to you.

§06 / How we work

Standards, not shortcuts.

Gas isn’t water. A bad joint on a water line stains a ceiling. A bad joint on a gas line is a different conversation. We work to the standards every gas fitter is meant to, and we issue paperwork that proves it.

§07 / Gas fitting FAQ

The questions everyone asks about gas work.

Direct answers from a licensed Penrith gas fitter. If your question isn’t here, send it through and we’ll add it.

I can smell gas right now. What should I actually do?
Don’t light anything, don’t switch any electrics on or off (a spark is enough), open windows on your way out if you can do it safely, and leave the building. If the smell is strong or you can’t find the source, ring 000. If it’s faint and clearly outside, you can ring your gas distributor’s emergency line or ring us and we’ll respond as fast as we can. Don’t try to find the leak yourself with a flame or matches, ever.
Do I really need a compliance certificate for a cooktop swap?
Yes. In NSW, any gas appliance installation or replacement requires a Gas Compliance Certificate issued by the licensed gas fitter who did the work. It protects you legally if anything goes wrong, it’s required for insurance to cover gas-related incidents, and it’s needed at sale of the property. We issue it as standard, you don’t need to ask.
Can I install a gas cooktop myself if I’m handy?
No. Gas work is licensed work in NSW. An unlicensed install is an offence, voids your insurance, and isn’t legal at sale of the property. It also tends to be exactly the kind of install we get called to fix later. Save yourself the trouble, ring a licensed gas fitter.
What’s the difference between natural gas and LPG installs?
Different gas, different pressure, different burner orifices, separate certification. Natural gas runs at lower pressure and comes off the network through your meter. LPG runs at higher regulated pressure and comes off a cylinder or bulk tank. Appliances are usually configured for one or the other, and converting between them needs the right kit and a separate compliance check. Tell us which you’ve got when you ring.
My gas line is original 1970s copper. Is it safe?
Original copper that’s been undisturbed and is in a dry environment is usually still serviceable. The cases we’d flag concern on: lines that have been broken into and reconnected multiple times, lines run through corrosive environments, or appliance valves from the same era leaking at the spindle. If we’re connecting a new appliance to an old line and it pressure-tests cleanly, we certify the work we did. We don’t issue standalone certificates for someone else’s existing pipework.
How long does a gas hot water swap take?
Like-for-like swap is usually two to four hours including isolation, removal, install, pressure test, commission, and certificate paperwork. Changing from storage to continuous flow, or relocating the unit, adds time because pipe runs may need to change. We confirm the actual timing on the on-site quote so you know what to plan for.
What’s the warranty?
12 months on our workmanship, parts and labour both. If anything we installed or connected fails inside that window from a workmanship cause, we come back and fix it free. The appliance itself comes with the manufacturer’s warranty (usually 1 to 10 years depending on the unit). We hand over the documentation and handle the claim on your behalf if the unit fails inside its warranty.
§08 / Licensed and certified

Gas work, done properly.

Ring the workshop and tell us the scope. We’ll narrow the quote on the call and book the visit on the spot. Compliance certificate issued on every qualifying job.
